What I'm Currently Reading - Peacekeeper

Harrison
I loved Laney Landers before most people learned to read.
Blonde hair, blue eyes that rivaled the ocean, and an invisible halo over her head.
She stole my heart the same day she threw sand in my face.
What started as a friendship grew into so much more.
I thought she’d be my forever.
But then life threw me a curveball and I changed course.
Laney moved on and found a different happily ever after...
While I wallowed in grief and regret.
And now she’s here, reminding me that I made the biggest mistake of my life.

Laney
I loved Harrison Montgomery since the first day he saved me a seat in kindergarten.
He was my best friend, my own real-life prince.
He taught me to ride a bike and showed me how to shoot a three-pointer in basketball.
He was my first kiss.
My first love.
My first heartache.
My first everything.
I don’t believe in happily ever after anymore.
Harrison forced me to write a new ending to my story.
But seeing him again after all these years—it makes me want things I shouldn’t.
Because that chapter of my life is closed forever.
Or is it?

Excerpt From Red Zone (Daniels Brothers #2)

Hansen helped her carry her bags upstairs. Thankfully, they hadn’t dropped them off at the hotel earlier. The last room on the left was clearly the master suite and his, so she chose the one directly across from it. The walls were a soft baby blue that matched the bedspread. It wasn’t as frilly as the hotel room, but it still had that air of money about it, including an en suite bathroom that had a large shower and a soaker tub. As much as she hated to admit it, she liked it.

Since she’d only brought a week’s worth of clothing with her, it didn’t take her long to unpack. They were on their way downstairs within twenty minutes. As they reached the bottom of the staircase, they heard voices. Each glanced at the other before reaching for their guns and edging down the last remaining steps.

Rounding the corner, they saw a man talking with Daniels. He appeared to be about her height, wearing a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up fashionably and neatly pressed pants. He didn’t look threatening, so they both holstered their guns and stepped into the room.

Before they made it more than a few feet, the new arrival noticed their entrance and was quickly racing toward them. Correction. He was racing toward her.

“Oh! This must be her,” he gushed. “I see what you mean. I can definitely help.” Before she knew what was going on, he was reaching for her suit jacket, trying to remove it.

She reacted instinctively before thinking it through. Within seconds, the man was bent over the kitchen island with his arm pulled tight and high along his back.

“What in the world are you doing?” Daniels demanded.

“What was he doing?”

“Jeez, lady. Relax. This is Charlie, my stylist.”

Glancing down at what she then realized were his designer clothes, Rebecca conceded she might have overreacted a bit. She wasn’t used to people grabbing at her and trying to remove her clothes like that. She stepped back, releasing him. “Sorry,” she said. “Just please don’t try to remove my clothing without asking first.”

“Got it. No problem,” he said, glancing between her and Daniels.

Hansen recovered faster than the rest of them. “What’s he doing here?” he asked, nodding at Charlie.

“My girlfriend is going to need some new clothing if she’s going to be out in public with me. Outfits like that,” he pointed at the suit she was wearing, “won’t do.”

“And what exactly is wrong with my clothing?”

“Honey,” he said, walking up, getting way too close for her comfort. “The places I go? You’ll stick out like a sore thumb in an outfit like that.” Then he leaned in and whispered in her ear. “Or do you want everyone to know you’re my bodyguard?”

Excerpt From Behind Closed Doors (Daniels Brothers #1)

“Elizabeth?”

Rushing out, she saw a furious and somewhat frightened Chris.

“What—”

He crossed the room in three long, determined strides and backed her up against a wall. A moment of panic registered before her brain kicked in again. Chris. Not Jared. She felt small pressed up against him like this, felt every muscle in his body against hers, but the fear wasn’t there. And then she couldn’t think anymore as Chris took her head in his hands, tilted it upward, and kissed her.

This was so unlike the kiss they’d shared previously. Before it had been soft and gentle, providing comfort. This kiss—this kiss had nothing to do with comfort. There was an edge to it. She could feel his anxiety seeping through the kiss itself.

Pushing away to hold her at arm’s length, but not relinquishing his grip on her, he said, “What are you doing down here?”

She was so disconcerted from the kiss that it took her a moment to get her thoughts together. Before she could respond, his mouth was on hers again.

His lips were just as possessive as they had been before, but this time his hands roamed down her arms and back. Chris’ touch sent heat through her body, and she felt almost dizzy from the sensation.

She didn’t want to lose the feeling. Lifting her arms, she wrapped them around his neck. Suddenly Chris’ body relaxed against hers, and he deepened the kiss as his hands continued to explore.

It's National Book Lovers Day!

Today, August 9th, is National Book Lovers Day. Whether you're someone who devours books, or you're a mood reader, this day is for you.

Books have the unique ability to transport us to different places, times, and allow us to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. We can explore emotions and situations we might never in our day to day lives. They can make us laugh, cry, fall in love, and dream.

For many, books are a source of comfort. We can escape the worries of life and dive into the joys and challenges of fictional characters.

There are lots of ways to celebrate National Book Lovers Day.

1) Re-read your favorite book.

2) Read a new author.

3) Visit your local indie bookstore.

4) Join a book club.

5) Start writing a book.

As an author, I'm constantly reminded of the impact stories can have. I've had a number of readers reach out to me regarding my Finding Anna series and how it has touched them.

How are you celebrating National Book Lover's Day?

Breaking Through Writer's Block

Writing blocks are inevitable. They're just part of the writing journey. When they happen, they're frustrating and sometimes you feel like you're never going to get through them.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to break through your writer's block:

1. Make A Move

If you're used to writing at your desk, maybe move to the dining room table. Go to the library, or maybe the local coffee shop. Sometimes new surroundings can get those creative juices flowing again.

2. Set Realistic Goals

As creatives, we tend to shoot for the stars even if that isn't realistic. So instead of setting large goals like finishing the book you're working on, break it down into smaller, short term goals. That could be finishing a chapter, or even a single paragraph. Progress is progress.

3.Take A Walk

Sometimes the best way to inspire creativity is to step away from your writing and go for a walk. I've broken through many blocks in my writing by going for a walk and talking out a scene or a character's motivations. Nature can be really inspiring!

4. Just Write

This may seem counter intuitive, but hear me out. Sometimes we, as writers, want to sit down and write a master piece right out of the gate, but that's not realistic. There's a reason successful authors don't publish their first drafts. But if you're trying to push through a creative slump, it doesn't matter how good it is. No one's going to see it but you. The goal is to let your mind wander until something clicks and the story starts flowing again.

5. Explore Your Creativity

If you're struggling with writing, maybe try another creative medium. This might be Painting, drawing, or scrap booking. For me, it's singing. I'm able to focus on both the creativity and the technical aspects of music while losing myself in the song. It both relives stress and gives my brain something else to focus on.

6. Re-find Your Inspiration

What made your want to write books? Was it a book? A movie? Did your love a reading make you want to create stories of your own? For me it was a need to give the couples I love their happily ever after.

7. Set Time To Write

It's so easy for life to get in the way of writing. My life is a perfect example of that. Being a small business owner on top of my writing and author career makes balancing everything a challenge. I'll be the first to admit, I'm not perfect at finding balance and I prioritize my mental health above all, so sometimes the writing doesn't get done. But having a schedule, a time set aside each day or week for writing, will not only allow you to make progress in your story, but the structure can remove a lot of stress so you're not constantly thinking about your writing during family activities.

8. Writing Prompts

Do you remember when you were given writing prompts in school and told to write a 500 word essay? You can still do that! It can be anything. I used to be in a Facebook group where every Friday where we were given a picture and asked to write exactly 100 words. It was fun, and yes, it got those creative juices flowing.

Writing blocks are a natural part of the writing process. Creating something out of nothing, even if it's all occurring in your head, takes a lot of energy. Give yourself permission to work through your creative block. Just because someone else can pump out 10 books a year doesn't mean you have to.
