#Review of Dangerously Hot by Lynn Raye Harris

Title: Dangerously Hot
Author: Lynn Raye Harris
Rating: 4.5 stars

This is yet another reason why I love to read Lynn Raye Harris' books. I know when I pick one up that I will be treated to a great story that will have me not wanting to say goodbye to the couple.

Dangerously Hot brought together Lucky, the widow of a former HOT teammate, and his best friend, Kev. Reading this one was kind of interesting, mainly because I'm currently writing a story with a similar bases. Even though the stories go in completely different directions, there were some similarities, including the guilt Kev feels about his feelings toward Lucky.

As with all of Lynn Raye Harris' characters, I loved Kev and Lucky together. They brought out the best in each other and it was so clear from the beginning that there was more than friendship there, even though neither wanted to admit it at first.

One of the ways I can tell I loved a book is that when I finish it I immediately want to go back and re-read my favorite scenes. That was definitely the case with this one.

If you're looking for a sexy romantic suspense novel with hot military men, I would highly recommend this one.

Do You Judge A Book By Its Cover? #SelfPublishing #Marketing

We've all heard the phrase 'never judge a book by its cover'. But the truth of the matter is most readers do judge. It's the first impression they have of your novel. And if you're going to self publish your own novel, that's something you need to keep in mind.

Marketing is a scary word for most writers. The vast majority tend to be introverts who'd rather spend their days typing out words than thinking about how to sell their book. But the reality is, if you're going to self publish your novel, you do need to think about these things. One of the first marketing decisions you will need to make is choosing a cover.

I wrote a blog post a while back about the different options an author has when choosing a cover: pre-made, stock, or custom, so I won't be covering that again. If you'd like to check out the other blog post click HERE.

A lot more goes into choosing a cover for your novel that just deciding on whether to use a pre-made cover, a cover with a stock photo, or doing a custom shoot.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Genre. It's always a good idea to research your genre. By that I mean go to Amazon and find out what books are in the top 100 Paid in your category. Look at the covers and look for similarities, themes. Are there certain colors that are common? Do most of them have people on them? Objects? Is the font fancy script or more of a block type lettering? It may not seem all that important now, but keep in mind this is what readers are buying in your genre. They are buying it for a reason.

  • What Fits Your Story? While you want a cover that fits into your genre, what you don't want is a cover that says nothing about your story. If you're writing a fantasy novel about witches, you probably don't want a half naked man on the cover. There are also some readers that are picky about hair and eye color, so if you're using models on your cover keep that in mind when selecting the picture/models you're going to use.

  • Branding. This is a step many authors forget about when it comes to marketing, but your brand as an author is very important. When it comes to covers, the thing to remember is consistency. This can take on a few forms.
    1. Your Name. It sounds simple enough, right? But making sure your name appears in the same font on all your covers is important. It's like your signature that identifies you as being you. It also looks neater and more professional when you have multiple books in one place.
    2. Titles. This one is a little more flexible. Not every title of every book you write has to be in the same font or have the same cadence to it, etc. But if the books are part of the same series, then having that consistency is very important. Again, it looks more professional, but it's also a signal to readers that these books belong together, so if they like one then they will most likely like the other. Below are two of my series. You can clearly see by the design and titles which books belong together.

Details matter and your book cover needs to convey the story you want it to to potential readers. Consider what appeals to you when you're browsing through a bookstore for a new book.

  • Thumbnail. What is a thumbnail, you might ask? A thumbnail in the book world is how we refer to the small picture of your book cover on Amazon. Considering most authors sell more than half their ebooks via Amazon's website, how your book looks on the site while readers are scrolling through potential books to buy is important. The picture needs to be clean, crisp, and it needs to draw the eye of the reader.
Some common mistakes I see are:
    1. The Cover Is Too Dark. It's fine that your book has dark elements, but if a reader can't see those elements on the cover then that doesn't help you sell that book.
    2. The Font Is Too Small. People need to be able to read what's on your cover, even at a thumbnail size. As you can see from the covers I posted above, the titles are clear and stand out. Some authors choose to make their name more prominent and if you've built up a big enough fan base that makes sense as your name will automatically draw readers. Personally, I prefer the story take center stage, so I want my titles to be what stands out the most.
    3. There's Just Too Much Going On. If your cover has too much stuff on it, it ends up looking like a garbled mess...especially on a thumbnail. Keep it simple. Your cover should be a snapshot of your story. Once you get a potential reader to click that buy button, then they can discover all the other fascinating elements you have within your book.

Don't forget your cover is most likely the first thing readers will notice. First impressions are everything. Make it a good one.

Tempting Levi by Jules Barnard #NewRelease #SexyRomance

Release Date: June 6, 2017

Cade men are known for two things: arrogance and competitiveness. I grew up in one of the wealthiest, most dysfunctional families in Lake Tahoe, and all I wanted was to get the hell out. I thought I'd succeeded. Until an accident burned up my firefighter ambitions. Then Dad died and left me in charge of the family's luxury resort.

Now I've got financially uptight advisors telling me what to do, and I need someone I can trust working at my side. The perfect candidate walks through the door in her pencil skirt, fitted white blouse, and that mass of wavy blond hair she tries to contain.

The only problem? She's my cheating ex's younger sister.

Hell no. The last thing I need is another Wright female in my life.

But Emily's good at the job, and she seems trustworthy. I should ignore the desire I have for her. But after all I've lost, I'm tempted by what I can't have and ready to stoke the flame that smolders between us. As long as this Wright sister doesn't betray me the way the last one did.

Then again, I always liked playing with fire.

#Review #Romance Hot Item by Carly Phillips

Title: Hot Item
Author: Carly Phillips
Rating: 4 stars

Last week my husband and I went to a book sale at our local library and I picked up this book. I've seen Carly Phillips books many times, but I'm fairly sure this is the first one I've read. Why I waited so long, I have no idea.

I really enjoyed Riley and Sophie. They were a good compliment to each other. My only complaint was that I really wanted to see more of them. The romance moved very quickly and for what was there it was believable. These two have known each other for a while, so it wasn't as if they were complete strangers who fell in love over night but it did happen fairly quickly. I would have liked to have seen it slowed down just a little.

There was also quite a bit of head-hopping and another romance that gets thrown into the story. I thought the side story between Cindy and Miguel, was interesting, but I'm not sure it was necessary to move the plot along. It did, however, keep me guessing as to whether or not Miguel was responsible for the trouble at the sports agency where Sophie worked.

This was the third book in the series, but I didn't feel lost even though I hadn't read the first two books.

I really enjoyed this book and will most likely read more by this author in the future. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced contemporary romance.

Do I Really Need An Editor? #writing #selfpublishing

As I talked about in last month's blog post, Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing - 3 Major Differences, when you self publish editing your novel is all up to you. There isn't a publisher with a team of editors and cover designers. That's all on you, the author.

There is a huge debate, and I do mean HUGE, in the self publishing community as to whether or not an author needs to hire a professional editor. I'm of the opinion that hiring an editor is a must. It's not something you should do, but something you owe to not only your readers but yourself as well.

So why don't some writers hire editors?

The two main reasons I hear are:

1) They are two expensive. And 2) They will alter my words and then they won't be mine anymore.

Editors do cost money, sometimes a good amount of money. For a 100,000 word manuscript you will normally be looking at paying somewhere between $500-$1,000 depending on the editor you choose to use.

To put this in perspective,

- If you sold your book for $2.99 on Amazon, you'd need to sell 478 copies just to cover the cost of editing if your editing cost you $1,000.

- If you sold your book for $3.99, you'd need to sell 358 copies.

- If you sold your book for $4.99, you'd need to sell 287 copies.

Also, keep in mind this is only what you'd need to sell to cover editing costs. This doesn't include the cost of your cover, formatting, or any marketing you choose to do.

So why spend the money? Why pay someone else for something you could just do yourself?

To put it simply, quality and professionalism. Now, there are probably a few authors that could, and maybe can, edit their own manuscripts, however they are in the minority. Most writers have read over their work so many times while writing it that they either see things that aren't there or miss things that are. There's also the fact that it really is a good idea to have another set of eyes on your manuscript. Something you may think makes perfect sense may in fact have everyone else scratching their head.

For example, I started reading a book recently where the heroine ended up marrying the heroes best friend because when she found out she was pregnant five years before the hero said he didn't want to be a father. As I began reading, I started noticing a few things. The conversations were unnatural and didn't flow well. There were also issues with the pacing. One day the heroine goes from crazy mad at the hero for leaving them high and dry five  years before to being ready to jump into bed with him the next. But what really had me scratching my head was the backstory itself. Halfway through the book (where I finally gave up) we still didn't know exactly how everything went down five years before and how she ended up marrying the heroes best friend. At one point it sounded like the hero 'called in a favor', and then at another part it sounded more like the heroine had approached the friend when the hero wouldn't 'step up.' There was definite confusion, which all could have been worked through with a good editor.

But what about editors changing your words so they don't feel like you anymore?

It's true. There are editors out there who do this. I had one once who completely rewrote the sample I sent her to the point where it didn't sound like me or my characters. She and I did manage to make it through the manuscript we were working on after I sent her a strongly worded email basically telling her to knock it off, but I swore I'd never work with her again.

A good editor should be looking for grammar, spelling, formatting, and other errors along with plot holes and inconsistencies. They should also be looking at how your book flows. Is there a lot of information thrown in that isn't really needed to move the story along? Does something happen where it seems like everything makes sense to the characters but the reader is left feeling as though they're missing something? These are all things an editor SHOULD be doing.

So that brings us back to why I think authors need to hire a professional editor. In a nutshell, if you're asking someone to pay for a product you've created, then you should be presenting them with a finished product. It's sort of an unspoken agreement between buyer and seller. You wouldn't go into a store and buy half a candy bar.

And while I understand that creative things such as writing aren't as subjective as a candy bar, it is a product and if you're asking people to spend their hard earned money on it then they deserve to receive a product that was polished and ready for sell.

Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing - 3 Major Differences

Last Saturday I sat on a panel at the Ohioana Book Festival called Publishing: Let's Count The Ways. There were four authors and we'd all published both traditionally through a publisher and self published our own books. It turned out to be an amazing panel and what I took away from it was that a lot of people have questions about self publishing. Some don't even know where to start.

So, with that in mind, I'm going to be writing a series of blog posts to hopefully help some of you out there who are thinking about self publishing. There's a lot to know if you choose to go the self publishing route and I don't claim to know it all, but hopefully I'll be able to share some of my knowledge.

Self Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing

You've written your novel, so now what? Do you find an agent? A publisher? Or do you self publish?

The answer isn't as straight forward as you'd think. In fact, it takes a fair amount of research, and to be honest, a little soul searching to decide which publishing option is right for you. Below are three of the main differences between self publishing and traditional publishing.

1) Genre. Some genres sell more ebooks than paperbacks. Romance, for example. This makes self publishing extremely attractive to many romance writers these days. When 90% of your sales are ebooks, it isn't as important to get a physical copy of your book into book stores.

But with other genres, young adult for example, paperbacks still outsell ebooks. That makes having your books in stores an important factor, which is less likely to happen if you're not with a traditional publisher.

Research your genre of choice and find out how most of your potential readers are buying their books. This might effect which publishing option you choose.

2) Choice. Before you sign with a traditional publisher, make sure you read and understand your contract. Most authors give up any say in the cover, title, and even editing decisions when it comes to their manuscript. It's best to know what to expect going in.

If you choose to self publish, you have complete and total control. This can be a good thing, or it can be disastrous. Cover, title, editing...all of it is up to you.

3) Cost. One of the advantages to traditional publishing is that the publisher covers the cost of publishing the book. They pay for the cover design, the editing, formatting, and usually some of the marketing. Depending on the publisher and the contract, sometimes the author is even given an advance. The publisher is making an investment in the author and the book.

With self publishing, the author has to cover all the cost associated with publishing and marketing. This can run anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand. Instead of a publisher investing in the author and their book, the author themselves are doing the investing.

Did this blog post help answer any of your questions? If you're already published, are you traditionally published or self published? Do you agree with what I said above? Let me know in the comments.

Sale Ends April 4th - Don't Miss Out #Romance

Six months ago a group of authors got together and published Cuffed & Claimed, a law enforcement anthology. The goal of this anthology was to not only treat our readers to some sexy stories featuring heroes that wear a badge, but also to raise money for charity. All the proceeds from the sale of Cuffed & Claimed are going to a LEO charity.

But sadly, as all good things do, it must come to an end. At the end of business tomorrow, April 4th, Cuffed & Claimed will be no more and the stories will go back to the individual authors. Some will be republishing them as individual novellas, while others are planning to expand the stories into full length novels. Either way,  you'll not be able to get all ten of these stories again for only 99 cents.

#Review His Tempting Bride by Jenn Roseton

Title: His Tempting Bride
Author: Jenn Roseton
Rating: 3 stars

After not finishing the last two books I picked up, I was happy to find this. I enjoyed the set up and find Gage extremely easy to like.

Overall the story flowed well. It didn't feel rushed or bogged down. I also liked the fact that we get to meet Gage's brothers, although I would have liked a little more with them given this is the first book in a new series.

Now to the parts I didn't like and the reason this book got three stars instead of four. In one word, repetition. When Gage tells Heather about his brother Zach, he informs her Zach tames horses...three times in three chapters. But worse than that, for me, was the constant use of the word 'curvy' or some variation. Heather constantly refers to herself as curvy and asks over and over again if the hero could love a curvy girl like her or love her curves. It became too much and began pulling me out of the story.

Will I read this author again? Maybe. As I said, the story was good, but I wanted the heroine to have a bit more confidence in herself.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a BBW romance and doesn't mind heroines with confidence issues.

Etsy - Buy Signed Copies Of Books By Sherri Hayes #Romance

I'd been going back and forth trying to figure out the best way for readers to order signed copies of my books. I'd tried Google forms in the past, but unless I check it every day it doesn't work all that well and I'd much rather use that time writing instead of checking a form.

A couple of months ago I came across another author who was using Etsy to offer signed books to readers for purchase. I did a little research, talked to a few other authors about it, and decided to give it a go.

All of my full length novels are available now on Etsy.

Detective Paul Daniels has spent four and a half years mourning the loss of his wife. He’s been doing his best to raise their daughter, Chloe, with the help of his in-law’s. When they inform him right before Thanksgiving that they’re going to be moving over two hours away, Paul finds himself without anyone to watch Chloe while he’s at work. Little did he know that meeting his baby brother’s girlfriend and her sister, Megan, would change everything.

Megan Carson took a few wrong turns in her life, but she was doing her best to get back on track. When Paul mentioned his need for someone to watch his daughter, she quickly volunteered to be his live-in nanny. It didn’t take long for Chloe to work her way into Megan’s heart, and not much longer for her to realize that she was falling in love with Chloe’s dad.
