Missing The Point by PJ Fiala #NewRelease #Romance

Sometimes, being on the opposite side of the track, gives you a better view.

Sam McKenzie has everything he needs in his professional life. Bluegrass Security is going strong, he just purchased a home for the first time in his life, he even got himself a dog. Personally, however, life was a bit unsettled. His growing crush on Stevie Jorgenson was unrequited – he just didn’t know why. She seemed to enjoy spending time with him, he’d caught her staring more than once, but yet, she seemed wary to take it to the next level.

Stevie Jorgenson had worked her entire life trying to step from the shadow of her wealthy family, including the family horse business. Excelling at the police academy and then making detective in Chandler County had been hard work. Now, her growing attraction to Sam McKenzie was beginning to shade her with its shadow. The trouble was his biggest client was her father’s rival in business and that could make things messy. The other issue was his client was also a dirty dealer and she had to uphold the law. How can they make it on opposite sides of the track?

Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing - 3 Major Differences

Last Saturday I sat on a panel at the Ohioana Book Festival called Publishing: Let's Count The Ways. There were four authors and we'd all published both traditionally through a publisher and self published our own books. It turned out to be an amazing panel and what I took away from it was that a lot of people have questions about self publishing. Some don't even know where to start.

So, with that in mind, I'm going to be writing a series of blog posts to hopefully help some of you out there who are thinking about self publishing. There's a lot to know if you choose to go the self publishing route and I don't claim to know it all, but hopefully I'll be able to share some of my knowledge.

Self Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing

You've written your novel, so now what? Do you find an agent? A publisher? Or do you self publish?

The answer isn't as straight forward as you'd think. In fact, it takes a fair amount of research, and to be honest, a little soul searching to decide which publishing option is right for you. Below are three of the main differences between self publishing and traditional publishing.

1) Genre. Some genres sell more ebooks than paperbacks. Romance, for example. This makes self publishing extremely attractive to many romance writers these days. When 90% of your sales are ebooks, it isn't as important to get a physical copy of your book into book stores.

But with other genres, young adult for example, paperbacks still outsell ebooks. That makes having your books in stores an important factor, which is less likely to happen if you're not with a traditional publisher.

Research your genre of choice and find out how most of your potential readers are buying their books. This might effect which publishing option you choose.

2) Choice. Before you sign with a traditional publisher, make sure you read and understand your contract. Most authors give up any say in the cover, title, and even editing decisions when it comes to their manuscript. It's best to know what to expect going in.

If you choose to self publish, you have complete and total control. This can be a good thing, or it can be disastrous. Cover, title, editing...all of it is up to you.

3) Cost. One of the advantages to traditional publishing is that the publisher covers the cost of publishing the book. They pay for the cover design, the editing, formatting, and usually some of the marketing. Depending on the publisher and the contract, sometimes the author is even given an advance. The publisher is making an investment in the author and the book.

With self publishing, the author has to cover all the cost associated with publishing and marketing. This can run anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand. Instead of a publisher investing in the author and their book, the author themselves are doing the investing.

Did this blog post help answer any of your questions? If you're already published, are you traditionally published or self published? Do you agree with what I said above? Let me know in the comments.

Sale Ends April 4th - Don't Miss Out #Romance

Six months ago a group of authors got together and published Cuffed & Claimed, a law enforcement anthology. The goal of this anthology was to not only treat our readers to some sexy stories featuring heroes that wear a badge, but also to raise money for charity. All the proceeds from the sale of Cuffed & Claimed are going to a LEO charity.

But sadly, as all good things do, it must come to an end. At the end of business tomorrow, April 4th, Cuffed & Claimed will be no more and the stories will go back to the individual authors. Some will be republishing them as individual novellas, while others are planning to expand the stories into full length novels. Either way,  you'll not be able to get all ten of these stories again for only 99 cents.

#Review His Tempting Bride by Jenn Roseton

Title: His Tempting Bride
Author: Jenn Roseton
Rating: 3 stars

After not finishing the last two books I picked up, I was happy to find this. I enjoyed the set up and find Gage extremely easy to like.

Overall the story flowed well. It didn't feel rushed or bogged down. I also liked the fact that we get to meet Gage's brothers, although I would have liked a little more with them given this is the first book in a new series.

Now to the parts I didn't like and the reason this book got three stars instead of four. In one word, repetition. When Gage tells Heather about his brother Zach, he informs her Zach tames horses...three times in three chapters. But worse than that, for me, was the constant use of the word 'curvy' or some variation. Heather constantly refers to herself as curvy and asks over and over again if the hero could love a curvy girl like her or love her curves. It became too much and began pulling me out of the story.

Will I read this author again? Maybe. As I said, the story was good, but I wanted the heroine to have a bit more confidence in herself.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a BBW romance and doesn't mind heroines with confidence issues.

Author Bio

Jenn Roseton believes that romance and happy endings go together. When she’s not writing, she indulges in delicious gourmet chocolate.
Although she’s spent time in Wyoming, unfortunately she didn’t meet a sexy cowboy of her own.
Right now she’s working on the next romance in the Sisters of Rose Lark Ranch series.

Etsy - Buy Signed Copies Of Books By Sherri Hayes #Romance

I'd been going back and forth trying to figure out the best way for readers to order signed copies of my books. I'd tried Google forms in the past, but unless I check it every day it doesn't work all that well and I'd much rather use that time writing instead of checking a form.

A couple of months ago I came across another author who was using Etsy to offer signed books to readers for purchase. I did a little research, talked to a few other authors about it, and decided to give it a go.

All of my full length novels are available now on Etsy.

#Review Falling Into Forever by Elena Aitken

Title: Falling Into Forever
Author: Elena Aitken
Rating: 3 stars

This is the first book I've read by Elena Aitken and it's the second book in her The Springs series. Even though it was the second book in the series I didn't have any trouble following the story, although the characters from the first book do make some appearances in this story.

I liked Rhys and Kari. Both had solid backstories that created drama, but I kind of wished we'd gotten more of them together. I'm not sure why since the story included several scenes between the two, but by the end I sort of felt as if something was missing or that I wanted more.

While this was a solid story, I'm not sure if I will read more by this author.

I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a small town romance with characters who have a lot of personal baggage.

Author Bio

Living in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains in the foothills of Alberta, Elena spends her days chauffeuring her twins and writing stories - basically, living what she loves!

Elena escapes to the mountains as often as possible and can often be found sitting by the water, plotting her next book.

#Review Reckless by Mallory Crowe

Title: Reckless
Author: Mallory Crowe
Rating: 4.5 stars

It's been a while since I've read a story by Mallory Crowe and after reading this I'm kicking myself for not finding the time to read more. I enjoyed Reckless better than I did the first book I read by this author, Teaching The Boss.

Robert and Malia were such a great couple. I fell in love with them right away. The misunderstandings and conflicts between them were understandable once the full story of both their pasts came to light. There were also quite a few twists and turns in this one, some of which I didn't see coming.

This is the second book in this series, but I was able to read it without having read the first book. That being said, after reading this one I want to go back and read Colin and Jean's story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a sexy romance with two characters that have a complicated past.

Author Bio

Mallory Crowe has lived in Michigan her whole life and has been in love with romance ever since she'd skip to the end of every novel, just to make sure the hero and heroine survived and ended up together. She lives with her husband and three dogs. When she's not writing, she's spending too much time in front of the TV, hiking, or working with various animal rescues.

#Review Christmas Light by Jolyse Barnett

Title: Christmas Light
Author: Jolyse Barnett
Rating: 3 stars

This was my first time reading Jolyse Barnett. I'd originally started reading this story before Christmas, but life got in the way and I only recently got back to reading it.

The story had a strong opening. I loved how the author introduced the couple. These two hadn't seen each other for ten years and to say Ben had grown up was an understatement. Jade didn't recognize him at first, which brought a wonderful awkwardness to their first encounter in the story.

There were moments in the book that had me melting inside as these two reconnected after all the time that had passed, but there were other times when I was rolling my eyes at their lack of communication. If they'd been strangers, then I could have understood but they were supposed to be best friends. Considering what drove a wedge between them years ago boiled down to her not sharing her struggles with him, it felt as if she hadn't grown up and was still as insecure as she was as a teenager.

Despite the communication issues, I did like this book. It was a nice holiday read full of friends, family, and community.

I would recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a quick holiday read about best friends who realize they are made for each other.

Author Bio

A country girl at heart, Jolyse Barnett is living her happily-ever-after in Long Island suburbia with her real-life hero, two incredible children, and one very furry feline. Learn more about her by visiting http://jolysebarnett.com.

#FlashbackFriday Is There A Type Of Scene That Is Harder To Write?

This was originally posted as part of the Burning for Her Kiss Blog Tour in 2015.

Note: I did not make any changes to the article itself, so some things mentioned may be out of date.

Book Summary

Beth Davenport has no interest in getting involved with another man for the foreseeable future. To say her last relationship ended in disaster would be a colossal understatement. The only reason she agrees to put in an appearance at Serpent’s Kiss, a private kink club in downtown St. Louis, is because her best friend, Nicole, won’t quit nagging her. When she walks in the door that night, the last thing she expects to do is meet a man who will have her reconsidering her ban on men.

As a captain with the St. Louis Fire Department, Drew Parker is used to being in charge. His crew relies on him to make sure they know what they’re doing and return home to their families after every shift. It isn’t, however, what he wants in a relationship. Drew decides to join Serpent’s Kiss to see if what appeals to him in fantasy is something he wants to explore in the real world. He’s also hoping that he’ll be lucky enough to meet a woman with whom he can explore his desires. The night Beth walks into the club, he is intrigued. Drew has to get to know her better.

After what happened to her, Beth is reluctant to get involved with Drew. It doesn’t matter that he is sweet and charming. She’s been burned before and Beth doesn’t think she can survive having her heart crushed again. Drew, however, won’t take no for an answer. He wants a relationship and is determined to chip away at her defenses until she relents. Will she give him a chance, or did her ex leave her with scars too deep to heal?

~ * ~

  1. Is there a certain type of scene that is harder for you to write than others?

Probably transition scenes. The things that need to be written to get the story to the next plot point, but don’t carry major significance to the story. It might be something as simple as the character driving home from work, or a few hours or days passing by. Those scenes don’t tend to have a lot of emotion behind them, which makes them much harder for me to write.

2. If you can cast your characters in a Hollywood adaptation of Burning For Her Kiss, who would play your characters?

Drew: Jensen Ackles
Beth: Neha Dhupia

3.  What are qualities, challenge, and significance that each of the central characters bring to the overall story that make them strong characters?

Drew is strong, confident, and in many ways very much an alpha male. It was challenging to then take him and make it believable that he would want to give up control and submit to a Domme. In real life, however, there are many men like Drew—men who in their daily lives are always in control—yet yearn to give up that control to their partner.

Beth is also a very strong character. She needed to be in order to be a good fit for Drew. Her biggest challenge was showing her vulnerability without making her appear weak. At the beginning of the story, she has major trust issues. I think that helped to balance out her character well and make her more relatable to readers, even those who don’t typically read Femdom.

4. What draws you to this genre?
I was drawn into writing BDSM fiction after reading some stories online. The level of trust and communication required in these types of relationships intrigued me.

5. Characters often find themselves in situations they aren't sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

I’m in one of those situations right now. Along with BDSM, I also write contemporary romance. As I finished Beth and Drew’s story, I began looking forward to writing the final book in my Daniels Brothers Series. The only problem was that Trent and his lady weren’t talking to me. They’ve finally started to open up, but it’s slow going. I had to rewrite the first half of chapter one three times. Things are now moving, albeit slowly. It’s one of those times when persistence and patience is what’s needed.

6. What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Above all, keep writing. Like with anything else, you get better with practice. Also, get a good beta reader and hire a professional editor. They will help you put out the best story possible. You want to be proud of what you release into the world.

How can readers discover more about you and you work?

Read An Excerpt From Behind Closed Doors

Something inside Chris had snapped when he’d come out of the shower and Elizabeth wasn’t there. He could think of nothing but finding her as he’d raced down the stairs.
The moment he’d laid eyes on her, all reason went out the window. His body acted on instinct alone and had him pushing her up against the wall. He needed to feel her, to know she was all right.
Nothing he felt was the least bit gentlemanly. He wanted to devour her, to erase the dread he’d felt when he’d realized she was gone. He’d never felt that level of fear before, and he never wanted to again.
His hands slid down her lower back to cup her backside, pulling her against him. The feel of her soft curves pressed against him just fueled his desire.
When Chris lifted her up, it took little encouragement from him before she wrapped her legs around him.
Her lips were so soft against his, but they met his kisses with equal fervor. He could taste the orange juice she had with breakfast, but it held a minty undertone and the warm sweetness he remembered from the kiss last night.
Why did I ever think this was a bad idea?
Pressing her back against the wall, he slid his hand under her shirt. Her skin was just as soft as he imagined it to be. He took pride in her answering gasp. He explored her throat and neck with his mouth as her head fell back against the wall.
He was just inching his hand upward when he heard a knock on the open door behind him and a throat clearing. Chris took a deep breath and turned around, already knowing what he’d find. Jim was standing there with an uncomfortable look on his face.
“Sorry. The lady downstairs let me in. You said this was urgent, but I can come back if . . .”
“No,” Chris said. He cleared his throat and let Elizabeth's legs slip back down to the floor. "It's fine." He took a step back from Elizabeth and noticed her face was flushed and her breathing was ragged.
As if on cue, Jan appeared behind Jim at the door. "Oh good, you found them." Then to Elizabeth she said, “I thought maybe you’d join me for coffee while the boys do their thing.”
“Uh . . . sure,” Elizabeth said, wringing her hands together.
Her eyes stayed fixed to the floor as she left, and then she turned back, looking at Chris once more before disappearing.
He didn’t know how he felt about what had just happened between them. His body had wanted it, sure, but it didn’t change anything. In fact, it made him feel like a cad. She needed a friend right now. She’d just had her personal space violated, and no one deserved that, especially her.
