Halloween Memories
I grew up in a small town. When I say small, I don’t mean a
few thousand people. My little town has around three hundred in it. That might
not sound like much, but on Halloween most of the residents would go all out.
Over half the houses in town would be decorated, and their lights turned on
ready to pass out candy to all the trick-or-treaters.
One of my favorite parts about going trick-or-treating was
the candy. I know most kids would say the same thing, but it wasn’t just any
candy I had my sights set on. There was one stop that, no matter what, we had
to make every year. It was right on the main drag, which was good. Especially
on those Halloween nights when we were freezing our behinds off in winter
coats. Yep, it really does get that cold in October in Ohio.
What was so special about this house? Every year the lady
that lived there would make homemade popcorn balls to hand out to all the kids.
Now, I know that today people would be screaming because it wasn’t prepackaged
candy, but back then people did those sorts of things, and no one thought much
of it.
Let me just say that these popcorn balls were amazing. They
were one of the first things out of my bag of candy that I ate every time.
The woman that made these popcorn balls has long since
passed away, and so have the days when trick-or-treaters had the opportunity to
get a special little treat like this when going out on beggars night. I,
however, will never forget how a very nice lady and her popcorn balls made my
Halloween extra sweet.
