5 Things I've Been Told As A Romance Author

When you're out in the wild, as it were, you never know what you'll be asked when someone finds out you're a romance author. Especially, if they don't read romance. Here are a few things I've been told or ask over the years.

1) I have this amazing idea for a story you could write.

As flattering as this is, I don't need any more story ideas. I have plenty of my own. In fact, I have more story ideas than I have time to write them.

2) Oh, so you write mommy porn.

Sometimes this is said dismissively and sometimes it's said with a wink and a giggle. Either way, it dismisses the amount of work that goes into a well written story. Sexy romances aren't erotica even if they have erotic elements.

3) Are your characters based on real people?

On occasion I will get inspiration for a minor character or a villain on a real person I've met, but that's about it. I tend to base my main characters personalities around the backgrounds they came from.

4) Your husband must be one lucky man.

Yes, he is, but that has nothing to do with my books. LOL. As I mentioned above, my characters aren't based on real life. What does, or does not happen in my bedroom is no ones business and has nothing to do with what my characters do in the stories as they aren't based on me or my husband.

5) You look too innocent to be writing these types of stories.

I've never understood what this means, exactly. Does someone have to dress like a prostitute in order to write sexy books?

Have you encountered any of these? Let me know in the comments.
